What I’ve Learned About Skincare (And Mistakes to Avoid)

Skincare is a learning process, and along the way, we all make a few mistakes. Here are some of the most common skincare pitfalls I’ve learned to avoid (sometimes the hard way!) and tips to help you steer clear of them:

The information provided on this page is for educational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional dermatological advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Skincare needs vary by individual, and what works for one person may not work for another. Always consult with a qualified dermatologist or skincare professional before making significant changes to your routine or addressing specific skin concerns.

Skipping Suncreen

Sunscreen isn’t just for sunny days! UV rays can damage your skin even on cloudy days or when indoors near windows. Skipping sunscreen leads to premature aging, dark spots, and other skin issues.

Over-exfoliating

Exfoliation is great for removing dead skin cells, but overdoing it can strip your skin’s natural barrier, leading to redness, irritation, and breakouts.

Tip: Stick to exfoliating 1–2 times a week, and choose a gentle exfoliant that suits your skin type.

Using Too Many Products at Once

It’s tempting to try every new product, but layering too many at once can overwhelm your skin and lead to irritation.

Tip: Introduce new products gradually, and give them time (4–6 weeks) to show results before adding more.

Ignoring Your Skin Type

Using products not suited for your skin type can do more harm than good—for example, heavy creams on oily skin or harsh cleansers on dry skin.
Tip: Learn your skin type (or consult a pro) and choose products tailored to your needs.

Not Removing Makeup Properly

Sleeping with makeup on clogs pores and leads to breakouts, dullness, and even premature aging.

Tip: Double-cleanse if needed—start with a makeup remover or cleansing balm, then follow with a gentle face wash.

Picking at Your Skin

It’s so tempting to pop that pimple, but picking at your skin can cause scarring, spread bacteria, and worsen the issue.

Tip: Use spot treatments instead and let blemishes heal naturally.

Neglecting Your Neck and Hands

We often focus only on our face, but the neck and hands are also exposed to the elements and show signs of aging.
Tip: Apply skincare products like moisturizer and sunscreen to your neck and hands, too!

Not Drinking Enough Water

Skincare isn’t just about what you put on your face—it’s also about what you put in your body. Dehydration can leave your skin looking dull and tired.

Tip: Drink plenty of water daily and eat hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables.

Using Harsh Products for Quick Fixes

Harsh scrubs, alcohol-based toners, or drying acne treatments might seem effective initially but can damage your skin over time.

Tip: Opt for gentle, effective solutions that work gradually rather than looking for overnight results.

Skipping Patch Tests

Trying a new product without patch testing can lead to unexpected reactions or breakouts.

Tip: Always test a small amount of new products on your wrist or behind your ear before using them on your face.

Mistakes are part of the journey to finding a routine that works for you, and that’s okay! Skincare isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. Avoiding these common pitfalls can help your skin stay healthier and happier in the long run. And remember, when in doubt, keep it simple and consistent. Your skin will thank you!
