15 Fun Games and Activities to Do While Camping

Camping is a great way of unhooking from the complexities of urban living and getting some quality time with your loved ones. But as soon as everything is set up, you may find yourself thinking, “What is next?” You can try some quite interesting games and activities that will keep everyone entertained and you can create some great memories.

1. Capture the Flag

Capture the Flag is one of the oldest outdoor games designed for large groups of people during camping. In this game, you divide the players into two different teams each with their own flag. This game’s goal is very clear: to steal the opposite team’s flag, you must enter their territory, grab the flag, and exit safely without being tagged by the other team. This game promotes teamwork and is therefore suitable for adults and older kids; it is also a great way to get some physical activity.

2. Nature Scavenger Hunt

A Scavenger Hunt is one of the ways of gathering information about the local wildlife and the surrounding environment. Suggest a list of items to find, including leaves, rocks, flowers, or animal tracks. You can also have the campers photograph what they find rather than collecting the actual items.

3. Campfire Storytelling and Ghost Stories

Campsites are very boring when the ghost-horror tale is missing. You can sit by the campfire during nightfall and share spooky or eerie stories. Also have your friends introduce an improvisation game in which one person adds one line at a time to a story rather than an entire tale. This often only ends up leading to a collaborative, but more often than not quite funny tale.

Tip: For younger campers, you can tell light-hearted stories or spooky but not too scary tales.

4. Stargazing and Constellation Identification

The best way to see celestial magic is camping under an open starry sky as you barely get to experience it in city lights. With a stargazing app or a star map, have your group see if they can find different constellations. And if you’re lucky enough to see a shooting star make sure to make a wish!

5. Hiking and Geocaching

The best way to stretch your legs can be to visit some nearby trails and see the beauty of Mother Nature. Hiking gets extra fun with geocaching, where you have to find treasure while hiking with the help of GPS coordinates. It is a sport where geocachers put small containers with trinkets and other small items and the hiking adventurer finds it on the way. Geocaching is especially fun for kids, as they love the excitement of finding hidden treasures.

6. Nature Art

If you want to be creative, then create some nature-inspired artwork with your group by using natural materials such as sticks, stones, leaves, and flowers. You can also make sculptures, leaf prints, or mandalas on the ground.

7. Tug-of-War

Tug of war is a great competitive game and can be played with just a rope and some spirit. Choose sides and have a classic tug of war. It is a fun way of including everyone in rather pleasant or rather unpleasant test of strength. Tip: This game should be played on soft grass or dirt to prevent injury.

8. Fishing Tournament

For a friendly competition and if you are camping by a lake or river you can set up a fishing tournament. A small prize is awarded to the person who catches the largest fish or the most fish in a given time period.

9. Campground Olympics

A truly perfect way to ensure everybody comes together is by creating your own mini “Olympic” games. Some fun, challenges event include sack races, three-legged races, wheelbarrow races, and even a water balloon toss. Tip: Give out humorous medals or ribbons to winners, or create a trophy from materials you find at the campsite.

10. Balloon Toss

This game is simple, but so much fun. All you need is a balloon and a little space. Toss the balloon back and forth between two people without letting it touch the ground. Each time it’s caught, take a step back. As the distance grows, so does the challenge.

Pro Tip: This is a great option for younger kids or anyone looking for a low-key physical activity.

11. S'mores Making Contest

Who doesn’t love s’mores? Why not step it up with a s’mores-making contest? Just think about it: get creative with your marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate. See who can come up with the most inventive or the best tasting combination. Bragging rights are the prize (and perhaps a few extra s’mores!).

Tip: You can up the fun with peanut butter, caramel, and fruit as toppings.

12. Obstacle Course

To add some fun and a bit of rivalry, set up an obstacle course using ropes, logs and even rocks near your camp. See who can do the course in the fastest time, having participants race through it. It is a fun way to get some physical activity in as well as a way to test your agility. Pro Tip: Change the course to fit every skill level, and especially if you are with younger campers.

13. Rock Painting

As a quiet creative activity bring paints and brushes to do rock painting. Design and paint rocks with fun and inspirational messages or animals and then paint them. Then, either share the painted rocks with other campers, or take them back home with you.

Tip: This is a perfect rainy day activity or something to do while the campfire is dying down.

14. Campground Karaoke

Carry a portable speaker from a fun evening of music and set up a karaoke session under the stars. You don’t need a fancy microphone; Just sing along to your favorite songs and have fun with your camping crew as you do.

Tip: Building a playlist ahead of time keeps you safe from musical mishaps on your trip!

15. Campfire Cooking Challenge

Imitate the cooking style of a chef during a campfire cooking challenge. Select a theme, such as ‘desserts’ or ‘snacks’ and ask everyone to come up with something that can be made from the ingredients found at the campsite. Then sit around the fire and taste each one. This activity is great for foodies and people who like a bit of culinary creativity.

These games and activities do not only make the experience more fun, but they also assist in developing connection, inducing laughter and promoting creativity in the great outdoors.
